How To Get Natural Probiotics
Probiotics have recently taken the health food market by storm. The benefits of taking probiotics are advertised, and companies have sprung up, providing probiotic dietary supplements to meet the rising demands of health conscious consumers. However, taking a pill is not the only or even necessarily the best way to get your probioitcs.
Natural probiotics exist in certain fermented foods. These friendly microorganisms are known to stay in the intestines and keep harmful bacteria at bay, maintaining the proper balance of bacteria. This can help the body to function at a higher level for many reasons.
With drinking chlorinated water, taking antibiotics and eating a diet consisting largely of processed foods, the level of “friendly bacteria” in our gut is diminished. As the intestine is the organ responsible for most of our immune system, this bacterial imbalance can weaken our immune defenses, leaving us prone to illnesses and often with just a general feeling of poor health.
When natural probiotics are introduced into the system from foods that contain them, the levels of good bacteria in the gut are restored to where they should be. This means that the body is prepared to fight off harmful bacteria and digestion and other functions related to the proper intestinal environment are improved.
Many of the health issue that we experience today can be attributed to some of the dietary changes that have been made over the years. Currently in the United States, few people eat diets that contain many fermented foods. As a matter of fact, most people find the idea disgusting. This is in part because of the restrictions that have been placed on foods to make them safe.
Unfortunately, attempting to make foods “safe” has contributed to our decreased health and wellness! A diet that contains fermented milk products, such as sour milk like buttermilk or kefir is a great way to get natural probiotics. Yogurt is another dairy product that contains those good bacteria. People are often recommended to eat yogurt when they have a yeast infection or are taking antibiotics to help restore those good microorganisms in the system.
Some foods that have been found in other cultures in particular that contribute to improved health are fermented vegetables. Sauerkraut is a commonly known example, which many Americans scoff at. Kimchi is an extremely popular spiced and pickled cabbage that is eaten by Koreans, who are known to have good health. Many other pickled or fermented vegetables of different varieties also contain probiotics. Unfortunately, these types of foods are generally a turn off for most Americans.
In order to get natural probiotics, it is necessary to decide what you consider natural. Fermented foods generally contain them naturally, through the fermentations process, but it is important to consider that the probiotics contained in many of the blends and supplements on the market are made through fermentation of natural foods as well.
