Probiotics Use Aid Toward A Proper Balance Of Intestinal Flora
Our body’s intestinal microflora, or commonly referred to as just flora, is an all too important aspect of the human digestive tract and overall immune system. The flora is the collection of living organisms that inhabit the body and its balance is essential for healthy living. A well-balanced flora allows for an efficient digestive system plus aids in producing a high metabolic activity. When this intestinal flora balance is upset by the occurrence of harmful microorganisms, the result can be anything from slight digestive irritation to outright illness or disease.
Mankind has maintained this important balance for thousands of years through a basic diet that included fermented and cultured foods. Modern-day living presents several mitigating factors that have led to the successful overcoming these natural processes such as one’s diet, age, use of medication - especially antibiotics, illness, handling stress, infections, living location, ethnicity, socioeconomic situation and lifestyle. Research in recent years has discovered that the introduction of probiotics to one’s daily diet will help restore the intestinal flora probiotics once maintained through normal eating habits.
Research early in the 20th century led to the discovery of the importance probiotics can play in maintaining human health. Medical professionals now know intestinal flora plays an important role in health stimulating the immune system, protecting the body from invading bacteria and viruses while aiding digestion and assimilation of food. But, the importance of these bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract has been ignored for a long time, while the focus was merely placed on harmful pathogens and other factors that cause gastrointestinal disorders.
Proper balance within the intestinal tract is called “eubiosis” while the imbalance is referred to as “dysbiosis.” Research has shown that the dominance of specific bacteria, such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, provide a barrier against harmful organisms seeking to create a dysbiosistic scenario within the intestinal flora. About 85 percent of the intestinal flora in a healthy person should be good bacteria while 15 percent is bad bacteria. This will lead to a eubiosistic situation in the intestinal flora. The greater the imbalance, the greater the symptoms occur. A short imbalance may manifest as a small, or short-lived, irritation. Larger imbalances reduce the immune system’s efficiency, making the body susceptible to invading organisms that may cause disease and illness.
Naturally occurring helpful bacteria break down nutrients, such as carbohydrates, acting as agents maintain that all so important intestinal flora probiotics balance. When their numbers are decreased due to affecting factors of lifestyle, mainly diet, the body becomes susceptible to a wide array of ailments. The pathogenic bacteria rise in number causing ailments like bad breath, body odor and are considered responsible for long sustained human conditions such as acne.
Everyone in the highly industrialized world cultures of the day can benefit from daily probiotics supplements. The Western diet, filled with sugars, fatty meats and chemicals, along with our extended and possible overuse of antibiotics, makes the intestinal flora an unfriendly mix of harmful bacteria .Using probiotics may be the most efficient and best approach for keeping the balance of the intestinal ecosystem.
Before starting any daily dietary supplement regimen, consult with a physician.
